Zombie movies officially pwned the a** of vampire movies just by not casting Robert Pattinson as one, but when Zombieland cast the coolest young chick in Hollywood as a badass survivor of a post-apocalyptic world to star opposite one of the smartest young actors in Hollywood, Jesse Eisenberg, Twilight’s Pattinson-Kristen Stewart pairing got whooped too!
Marking the killer (literally) debut of director Ruben Fleischer, Zombieland quickly rose to being the top grossing zombie movie of all time in the USA and for good reason(s). Let’s call them the Zombieland Rules of Making an Awesome Zombie Movie:
Rule 1: Cast an eclectic bunch of actors who can kick butt just with their screen presence… but it helps if they look like they can kill zombies too.
Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) gave ample support to the leads in the movie by giving them something to fight for. While Harrelson’s character, whose only quest in the post-apocalypse world is to find Twinkies, forms an unlikely friendship with Eisenberg’s character, Breslin plays Stone’s too-smart-for-her-age sister.
Rule 2: ROAD TRIP!
When has a road trip movie EVER gone wrong? Think Motorcycle Diaries, Sideways, Broken Flowers, Almost Famous and so many more! And if you are on a road trip to survive a zombie breakout, things can get pretty interesting, especially if you live in LA and know the way to Bill Murray’s house…
Rule 3: Give out rules on surviving zombies
Not only does Zombieland succeed as a smart, quirky take on ‘nutting up or shutting up’ in the face of zombies, it also helps explicitly as a guide to surviving a zombie breakout! So, just in case, if you wake up one day and the girl you have a crush on tries to eat you because she’s turned into a zombie after getting the mad cow disease, you won’t die if you took my recco seriously and watched Zombieland.
So yes, here we have a zombie movie that doubles up as a road trip comedy AND has Emma Stone (who I’m counting on to accept any one of the 3457123 marriage proposals I’ve emailed her) – WATCH IT RIGHT NOW!
