Movie Recommendation: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003)

It is an ‘epic’ coincidence that the first anniversary of (what is quite obviously going to go down in history as) the greatest Indian youth and alternative pop culture magazine coincidences with the 10th anniversary of the first movie in the greatest American film trilogy ever made.

Yes, 10 years ago, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, released and with it, started a filmmaker’s and an entire cinema’s journey towards achieving what was considered, “an impossible film to make”. With his LOTR fantasy trilogy, author JRR Tolkein had created not just awe-inspiring fiction, but an entire new world – Middle Earth – complete with maps, languages, a past, present, future and a landscape so epic in scale that it would’ve been exceptionally daring, if not exceedingly foolish, to try and recreate it on film.

But Peter Jackson was foolish enough to dare, and for that, he’s second only to God where we are concerned. Because not only did he translate on screen the mythical world of elves, wizards, hobbits, dwarves, but he also lent it a soul that’s palpably human. Because not only did he create the greatest special effects extravaganza seen on film, but he also crafted a human drama unmatched in passion. Because not only did he faithfully adapt JRR Tolkien’s fictional work, but he also left a fierce stamp of originality on it, indelible in its legacy.

If ever there’s been proof of the existence of magic, this trilogy is it. Peter Jackson has managed to create a masterpiece of art that’s stunning in size, spectacular in vision, sweeping in scale, grand in emotions and insurmountable in inheritance. Watch it, buy it, worship it and adore it… because the motion picture experience doesn’t get better than this. (Also, we haven’t written such difficult English words for any other recommendation ever, so it *is* totally worth it)
